The Easthampton Democratic City Committee is pleased to invite community members and residents of nearby communities to an informational gathering to celebrate public education and to learn how charter schools, school choice, and other possible changes to public education policy impact funding and the future of our public schools. We will hear from fellow residents and friends about how great our public schools are despite the adversity felt in tight fiscal times. This event will provide an opportunity to hear about the history of public education in Massachusetts, to learn how reduced funding is adversely affecting our municipalities, to receive an update from a teacher from the ‘front line’, and also about how a proposed ballot initiative to raise the charter school cap might impact the quality of education in Easthampton and across the State.

Massachusetts Teachers Association President Barbara Madeloni will be the featured speaker. Her words will include a ‘call to action’ to further protect our public schools. Additionally, the event will feature words and comments from municipal elected officials, teachers and other supporters of our public schools. The event details are as follows:

Title: “Our Public Schools”

Where: The Community Room at Eastworks. 116 Pleasant Street, Easthampton, MA 01027

When: April 13, 6:30-8:30 pm (entertainment and light refreshments at 6:15 pm)

Who: The Greater Easthampton Community and neighbors.

The event is free and open to the Easthampton community and residents of nearby communities. Easthampton is one of many communities that have recently seen school budget cuts due to unforeseen costs associated with charter and school choice. No RSVP is required. Members of the public who have questions about the event are encouraged to contact us at easthamptondems@gmail.com or at 413-529-9462.
